Norm Yip Photography [& Art]

November 2005 Newletter

For those that have received this email, you were on my mailing list. Whether we contacted each other via photography or art, or through casual conversations via msn. In the past, I was sending out emails via my own email program, but could only sent it in small batches. And since my list was piling up to nearly 2,000, it was taking ages to send. Plus, it was so annoying to get mail bounced back to me. Regardless, what I'm getting at is that from now on, I'm forking in the cost of sending out newsletters to all my contacts via an email marketing program. But at any time, you can 'opt out' by unsubscribing. Then there'll be no hard feelings on either side right?

As for the newsletters itself, I will keep you posted on the various activities that are taking place within the confines of my work and passion of photography and art. Plus, of course, if there is some very newsworthy happenings in Hong Kong, I'll post them up too.

Asian Male Gallery Updated Photos
To the many people that have asked for more photographs of Asian men, it has finally happened. Many were photographed quite a number of months ago, but health problems this year forced me to take some time off, and so it was that the models and the audience would have to wait. I still have a few more guys besides what you'll see online, but I hope this will be sufficient for the time being. So if you click to my website at www.normyip.com, you'll see the beautiful and charming Nuo, and Eric with his deep penentrating eyes, while Shawn gleems with boynextdoor appeal.

Hong Kong Lesbian & Gay Film and Video Festival 2005
Hong Kong has it very good. We are fortunate enough to live in a city where a team of dedicated and progressive individuals have dared to make a difference to the gay and lesbian community by offering a film festival that is indicative of creativity, individualism, identity and social acceptance for what is naturally ours: our sexuality. No where else in Asian will you see a film festival of this capacity. 'Open Up' is this year's slogan and yes, I have a bit of myself spotted in the programme itself, both on-screen (Space of Desire by David Chow) and in a photographic exhibition (Gay Artists: Gay Art? at Art Statements Gallery). NOTE" I will be photographing some of the main events: Opening Gala party 17 November, the Bruce LaBruce meet the director party on 18 November and Closing Gala party on 27 November, and posting them online for all to see. More at www.hklgff.com -- please, take a look and support the films by attending a few movies.

Space of Desire by David Chow at the HKLGFF
Originally intended to be a documentary film, David approached me with the intention of creating a documentary. I followed through with the idea and the outcome was a rather bizzare film short entitled 'Temptation'. Raw and a bit open ended, the film left me a bit speechless, but it gave me a small glimpse of seeing myself on the big screen nude and erm...yes, nude. David continued to shoot more footage to complete the story, but I opted out on idea. The film was becoming fiction and my comfort zone was lost. Nevertheless, David has completed the film -- a feature length production at that. I have no idea what it's about now, but it seems that the reviews are not that bad from those that have seen it. Although my photographic artwork has been shown publicly before, I am very honoured to be a part of this year's photography exhibition featuring gay artists' work at Art Statements Gallery. SCMP Book Review of The Asian Male 1.AM
Tim's Cribb, a writer for the SCMP reviewed my book. It was months after sending the book to their offices, but it was well worth the wait. I can't say that I could be any happier, especially when he mentions the word 'master'. Makes me sound a bit old, but I like it anyway. To see the review in it's entirety, please click HERE. The book is available at HMV, Page One, Giorgio Armani Libri, Bookazine, and WH Smith. It's also sold in Australia, Singapore and the USA. More details on my www.studio8hongkong.com website.
