Arcadia, No. 9 (Blue Planet IV) depicts an aqua blue planet that floats in the mythical land of Arcadia. ‘Blue Planet’ is also the name of a documentary series by David Attenborough on the BBC where he notes that Earth’s surface is covered by 71% water. The painting takes its cues from an earlier piece, namely Arcadia, No. 5, but painted on a smaller canvas. The painting pays homage to the Earth and allows for the imagination to soar as its floats above the landscape of Arcadia where abstract and conceptual ideas are melded into the terrain of traditional landscape paintings.
