Breaking from the atmospheric landscapes in earlier paintings of Gaia, 1, 2, and 3, Gaia, No. 4 utilizes a living apple tree leaf as a stamp to create the stylized effect of a distressed print. This is a common technique used in gelatin printing, yet challenging to attain the right textures and colour combinations. The artist Norm Yip rediscovered the nature of leaves, roots, and living systems through gardening.
